What is difference between Lehenga choli, ghagra choli and chaniya choli?

Lehenga choli is known as Gagra Choli in Rajasthan and Chaniya Choli in Gujarat. It is a traditional attire for Rajasthani and Gujarati women for hundreds of years.

In south it is called Pattu Pavadai/Reshme Langa or Langa davani. The pavada is a skirt generally made of silk a golden border at the bottom. This is usually worn by teenage girls.

Langa - Voni/Dhavani is version of this outfit usually worn in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and some parts of Kerala. Langa here is a skirt.

Punjabis call it Lengha choli and usualy wear for folk dance.

Image explaining parts of lehenga choli

It is first choice of bridal attire these days in northern and western part of India. Many Pakistani and Bangladeshi brides also prefer this dress. Muslims wear it with long choli or they have a fusion of Salwar kameez and Lehenga. They wear long blouse that is long up to knees or ankle, and wear a skirs/lehenga underneath it.

Bridal one is quite heavy and decorated with thread and zari embroidery, crystals, zardosi, beads, feathers etc. Possibilities are un-limited.

I will shortly discuss about various occasions when it is suitable to wear.

Who should wear it and when?

Woman and girls of all age can wear langa choli. It does not matter what body type or shape you are this attire is suitable for petite to plus size silhouette.

Current trends in India, USA, Canada, and UK is that woman prefer chaniya choli for bride, bridesmaid, mehandi , sangeet functions of the wedding or for a festival like Navratri, Diwali and EID. In fact your wedding guest can also wear cheap lehenga cholli.

Bridal lehengas are typically very heavy due to amount of embroidery and motif work on it. Obviously as a bride you want to appear very special who is not less than a Bollywood celebrity. And groom sherwani made in matching color of bride’s lahanga or a contrast color for sherwani with hints of shades from bride’s dress. Bridal lenghas are usually heavy ranging from 6 pounds to 22 pounds or more in some exceptional bridal lehengas heavily embellished with zardosi, beads or crystals.

Some brides also prefer to have two dupattas, one is heavy to cover head, and other one usually lighter weight then main dupatta to wear on shoulder and draped around waist.

For Bridesmaid Lehenga cholis you may not want to spend huge sum of money, therefore look for cheap lehengas for bridesmaid. These are usually plain lengha with a border or some embroidery.

For reception look for bit light weight lehnga because you might be dancing. Go for lighter fabric like net or silk with heavy border on lahga and thinner version of border for dupatta. However it is completely your choice what type of lehenga you prefer for your reception. May be you want to show off, then do not be shy to be inspired by Bollywood Celebrity or Celebrity designers like Manish Malhotra, Sabyasachi, Neeta Lulla, Tarun Tahiliani, Charmi from London, Rohit Bal, Anju Modi to name a few.

For sangeet and mehandi light weight lehenga are preferred. For Mehndi night girls prefer bright colors like yellow and green. And for Sangeet night they prefer vibrant colors like magenta, pink, royal blue etc. Once again choice is your and it may all depend upon destination and theme of the wedding too.

What are different styles of lehenga choli

There are different styles and shapes of Lehengas and if you do not choose correct style of lengha for you, you might not be comfortable in it and you may not feel confident on big day.

There are various styles of the lehengas you can choose from. Here is a quick list:

Circular or Flared Lehenga Cholis

This is one of the oldest and very popular style. With volume of flare and gathering of pleats at hem these lehengas is suitable for pear-shaped or hourglass-shaped bodies. Designs of a Circular lehenga choli make it truly desirable. Be stunning when it is paired with short blouse.

Mermaid or Fishtail Lehengas

This lahenga is tight at hips and knees and flare from the falves giving it a form of fish tail. If you want to accentuate your figure this is a desired style for you.

Panelled Lehenga Cholis

This type of lahanga comes with panels attached horizontally. This type is suitable for sangeet night usually and light weight. This style completement pear-shaped or hourglass type.

A-line Lehenga Cholis

This style of lehanga features A-line hem, tighter around waist it flares out at the bottom of the skirt. Vertical panels are joined together, these panels are wider towards bottom and narrow down around waist. It complements pear-shaped body and tall woman.

Find out more about different styles and how it complement your body type.

What fabric to choose?

Lehengas are made in various fabrics like Georgette, Net, Tissue, Silk, Brocade, Banarasi Silk, Velvet and almost all available type of fabrics.

Choosing a right fabric is important for style of lehga you are going to buy. It also depend upong the weather. For summer get light fabric like silk, net, georgette and for winters opt for velvet, brocade or heavy silk.

But weather cannot be always deciding factor, it also depend on the style of the lehenga and how heavy bridal lehenga you are going to get made for you. E.g. for heavy intricate design silk, banarasi silk and velvet is suitable, for lighter one georgette and net could be best choise.

Does weight matter?

Of course yet, your lehenga dress should not be too heavy for the occasion. E.g. for Sangeet you want a light weight lahga with lot of flare. And for Wedding you want a heavy lehanga with intricate design and plenty of embellishments and sparkles.

What material is used to make motif designs?

Designers use vast variety of material for motif work on your dress to make it look stunning. Here is a short list of popular material used:

  • Zari and Resham threads – are used for embroidery and aari work
  • Zardosi – is made of tiny metal threads making a tiny tube. Artisans then uses thread to make various pattern of jardosi on the fabric. It gives a very metallic look and sharp outlines to design.
  • Beads – are usually synthetic and made artificially. It comes in variety of shape, sizes and colors. In fact we got a specific shape and size dyed from Mumbai to make a wedding gown with train for a customer from France.
  • Crystals/Stones – These are also available in various shape, size and colors. Natural and synthetic both. This enhances the overall presence of your personality. It adds sparkle to your wedding attire.
  • Sequins – are usually made of light metal, it is usually very thin, round shape with a hole in the center so that it can be stitched to a fabric. It is available in translucence plastic.

These are few material vastly used to make lehengas, talented designers are very creative and they use feathers, wool, tulle and everything that can add a statement to your outfit.

Should you buy lehengas online or offline?

You might have following questions:

Where do I buy nice wedding lehengas online? or What are some best online stores?
You can certainly find plenty of answers on question websites like quora, but all are promoting them selves. Following tips will help you find a suitable, affordable and reliable online lehenga seller yourself

If you are living in India most likely you are going to prefer to shopping lehenga offline, I mean from local fashion store. Where you can try the fitting, touch the dress and see the quality of it before you decide to pay for it.

If you are not living in India chances are that you may not have nearby Indian fashion store or it is too far away. E.g. if you are living in New York or Chicago, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Toronto, Sydney or France you can visit local Indian Boutique or stores. But what if you are not in metros, chances are less that there will be an Indian Fashion Store or if there is any they might not have enough variety to please you. Therefore you have only one choice left and that is to Buy Lehengas Online.

But how do you find a suitable online store for you when there are thousands of choices?

Here is a quick cheat sheet when you are buying a lengha online:

Before you decide to buy your lehnga, do bit of research. Consult about suitable style, fabric and design with elders in your family or friends and make a budget.

  • Google to find lehenga sellers
  • Check out available latest lehenga cholis on these websites
  • Note down common designs on these sites, because most of the websites buy from same manufacturers, therefore prices may vary.
  • Be cautious if someone is selling at ridiculously low price than other sellers, inquire about it before you order it.
  • Read reviews. Do not be overwhelmed by all good reviews. It could be fake review.
  • Be alert if there are negative reviews but negative feedback is good so that you know what you can expect and how it can be avoided.
  • After you short list your favorite lehenga websites, contact seller. Most likely they will be from India and you are in different time zone. Send them an email and ask about the dress you want to order. Don’t be shy ask as many questions as you want.
  • Evaluate seller’s response and find out one or two options with whom you feel comfortable.
  • Your best seller may not be the cheapest, see if you can get any discounts or free shipping or may be some customization or work out a deal.
  • Look for coupons online.

I have written a post in detail about how to buy lehengas online.  This might be of some help to brides who are going to buy expensive lenghas.

Customization of your lehanga choli

Whether you are buying your lahanga from a local store or online always ask if customization is available. Here are few scenarios:

  • The design you want to order has a short blouse but you want a long blouse.
  • You want additional dupatta for your lehengha or ghagra choli
  • You want additional tassels for your chaniya choli
  • You want blouse in different style than in image displayed
  • Your height is short
  • You want long sleeves but in image it is short or no sleeves
  • Before you order make sure your outfit can be customized for you.

Custom made lehenga choli

There could be many reasons for you to go for this option such as:

  • If you do not like any style or design from local or online websites
  • You want lehenga in different color or fabric
  • Your budget is low and local designer boutique is very expensive but you still want similar design
